                                             Art  / Design / Film

Art I (ages 9-11) - Cinde Matocha
David Quine said “Art is often seen as an extra. But is it really? If you’re interested in teaching your children World View then this is the most important study.” The child will visualize significant changes in ideas throughout history and then relate those changes to their cultural meaning.
To look at these ideas we will use The Annotated Mona Lisa.  We will spend time each class on art history and becoming familiar with the elements of art and principles of design. The  majority of or time will be spent in “creative art.” I will teach technique then give the student much room to create and use their imagination.   Various projects and medium will be used such as clay, watercolor, pastels and collage. Grading will be based on assignment completion and attempting the techniques taught. Class time is 1 ½ hours per week and cost is $37.00 per month. Supply fee is $50.00 per semester. Students will keep their supplies. Contact: 713-703-1254 cell, or cmatocha [at] sbcglobal [dot] net.  Address: 6506 Glenhill Dr.  Spring, TX 77389.

Art II (ages 12 and up) Cinde Matocha
We will spend time in each class on art history as stated above in Art I. The majority of our time will be spent on “creative art.”
I will teach technique, then give the student much room to create and use their imagination. We will study and work with pencil, clay, watercolor and pastel. If the students are interested in a certain medium or project I try to incorporate that too. Each student will have an art journal that they will work on in-between classes. Grading will be based on assignment completion and attempting the techniques taught. Class length is 1½ hours per week. Cost is $37.00 per month. Supply fee is $50.00 per semester. Students will keep supplies. Contact:  713-703-1254 cell, or cmatocha [at] sbcglobal [dot] net.  Address: 6506 Glenhill Dr.  Spring, TX 77389.

Rhetoric and Composition - John Garrett
This is an advanced writing course for students who have successfully completed the Basic Essay writing course and/or The Bridge writing course, or another English course with a strong writing focus in the 9th or 10th grades. The course will build on the concepts learned previously and will include all modes of writing: descriptive, narrative, informative, argumentative, comparison/contrast, process analysis, classification/division, style analysis, literary analysis, etc. In preparation for the argumentative essay, the students will study logic and reasoning, reasoning fallacies, motivational appeals, emotional appeals, as well as the concepts of logos, ethos, and pathos in effective writing. Utilizing the stages of the writing process as teaching/writing tools, the instructor will explore various prewriting, editing, and revising strategies to assist students in adding effective elaboration or commentary to their writing, as well as improving their use of the conventions of the English language. Young writers can learn a great deal from professional writers and their craft; therefore, the students will read excerpts from published writers for analysis and modeling. It is possible that, time permitting, the students will read a classic novel and write a literary analysis research paper about the work using the literary criticism available in a public or college library, or online. As a part of both the argumentative essay and the research paper, the students will learn proper documentation of information borrowed from other sources and Works Cited entries using MLA style. Class will meet 2 hours per week.  $50 per month plus $5 added to the first payment to help defray the cost of supplies. This class is for 11th and 12th grade students. The Bridge Literature and Composition – Grades: 9-11 Jack Hightower
This writing class is a Bridge between the Basic and Paragraph classes and the Advanced Writing course (Rhetoric and Composition). This class, while using the five (5) paragraph format, will take the student to the next level of writing in preparation for pre-college composition and essays. The student will use the basic understanding of paragraphs and essays and begin to expand them beyond the basic levels. In this course the student will be given exercises and activities carefully chosen to help and strengthen nine essential competencies. Critical reading will be advanced, that is, reading “between the lines” to know not only what was said, but what was meant and how it will affect your thinking. To do this, the student will explore their reading habits and sharpen them to accomplish the five necessary skills for critical reading. This course will also explore the ability of the student to have accurate communication – increasing the reserve of recognizable words as the student reads and listens more carefully and incorporates new words into their verbal communication and writing. The student will also be reading an American Literature Sampler and a British Literature Sampler, to acquaint the student with the richness of the written word in story, poetry and biography. This course will also review and strengthen organizational skills, such as, logical reasoning, patterns of organization, paraphrasing, précis writing, and development and writing of the research paper. Three – to - four hours per week study time should be scheduled for writing and reading. Class size is limited to 15 students. Class time will be 1 hour and 45 minutes per week. Reading/Spelling  Proficiency for Elementary Students – Susan Garrett
(Grades 1-5) This class is to help home school moms who feel they need to “jump start” their child’s reading or to strengthen reading foundations before taking the child to a higher reading level.  Mrs. Garrett specializes in working with dyslexic students but has successfully taught students with all learning styles.  In this class students will be helped with weaknesses in reading decoding, sight word recognition, and comprehension.  When students are proficient in a skill in the input area (taking the printed word from the page to the child’s brain), they will begin output (putting words in the brain onto the page—spelling and writing).  Students will need an index card binder with cards as well as an Explode the Code and Beyond the Code book.  Curriculum used by the teacher will include Merrill Linguistic Readers, Modern Curriculum Press Phonics A/ B/ C, Discovering Phonics (Riverside Publishers),  Stairway to Reading, and word lists from Bob Jones University Press elementary spelling books.  When ready, students will read books chosen by their parents with teacher advice.  Class will be 1.25 hours.  Cost is $45.
Completed registration form and first month's tuition check payable to Susan Garrett should be mailed to Debbie Gott, 9614 Dornoch Drive, Spring, Texas 77379  Contact: noteablelessons [at] hotmail [dot] com  (281) 844-1667.  References are available.

Secondary Spelling/Phonics Improvement – Susan Garrett

Most older students will tell you that they learned phonics skills when they were younger.  However, many of these students do not understand the importance of those phonics skills for their reading nor how to use that knowledge in their classes now.  In this class, students will do a review of phonics rules; they will be shown the “system” within the language that serves as a basis for the spelling of words.  Students will also learn about their particular perceptual learning style (visual, auditory, tactical, kinesthetic) and how to best use it when doing their schoolwork.   Second semester, students will be given vocabulary words in class; these words will be either read or spelled by the student.  They will then write a sentence using the word.  This helps to incorporate the basic phonics reading and spelling skills into complex, unknown words.   There will be no homework in this class; however,  students will be asked to use the knowledge from class in writing for their other classes.

                                                 History / Literature / Composition / Geography

The Great Ideas of Humanity:  Classical Rhetoric, Composition, History, and Literature (Grades 8-12) - Camille Goldston

This course includes History, Literature, and Composition (Rhetoric).  Our four year history cycle places us in modern times this year, with a focus on U.S. History.  This year's reading will include most of the following, plus some others:  Roots of American Order by Russell Kirk, Nathaniel Hawthorn's Scarlet Letter, letters of Adams and Jefferson, the Federalist Papers, books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Willa Cather, Democracy in America by A. de Toqueville, When You and I Were Young, Whitefish, works of C. S. Lewis, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, possibly works of Hemingway, Grisham, and Steinbeck (such as Travels with Charley).  We may include The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.  We'll probably finish with At Home in Mitford.  (Some classic literature, including the Bible, mentions actions that we don't want to imitate (sin) but we use excellent literature (with a goal of virtue in the lives of its main characters) to learn about life, confident that Christianity provides answers, the right answers to any question the world can ask.) The purpose of these studies is the transformation of the students, a growth in their wisdom and virtue, not just an exchange of information with the students.  Class discussions afford an opportunity for students to put ideas into their own words, increasing their understanding of these ideas.  Reading great literature allows the students to see the history of ideas and how the beliefs of writer and audience affect their perspective, their tastes, and their lives.  The writing teaches students how to think, to make good judgments, and to express their ideas clearly.  So some course goals include learning to see from a Christian perspective, to read a hard book, to think clearly and well (with Christian ideas), and to express ideas appropriately and well in conversation and in writing.  We also include maps, timelines, outside reading, historical movies, field trips, and projects for a more complete picture of the time period.  All of these subject areas are integrated by the ideas they have in common (ideas such as liberty, justice, truth, beauty, honor).  The writing curriculum pulls it all together by leading students to think through all the ideas in the literature and history period.  Then it teaches them to organize and write about those ideas.  So they learn to think of something to say about the subjects, organize their thoughts, and express the ideas clearly.  Thus they learn the three canons of writing: invention, arrangement, and elocution.  This is excellent preparation for the SAT writing test, so we also do timed practices for that in class.   No previous history or writing is required for the 10:45 class.  (The 8:45 class is open to returning students only.)  Parents need to supply a (2") 3-ring binder, 5 dividers, lots of lined paper, blank paper (for a timeline), pens, map pencils and sheet protectors, and project materials each semester.  The course has a one-time nonrefundable $155 book/admin/supply fee and a tuition of $120 per month including four hours of class instruction per week plus detailed writing assessment.  For more details see www.whetstone.bz or contact Camille Goldston at chg@whetstone.bz.  832-646-5073.

Classical History, Literature and Composition – (ages 10-13) Lisa Baldwin
The goal for the younger class is the same as for the older, to pursue wisdom and virtue.  Half of the class time will be spent discussing excellent classic literature, dealing with the great themes of all time such as honesty, diligence, hard work, leadership, and honor.  Students will be trained to ask the six questions of a narrative (What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen? Who was in the story? Why did it happen? And how did it happen?).  These six questions train students to remember the essentials of a story and thus strengthen reading comprehension skills. Students will also be coached to become an active reader vs. a passive reader by learning a highlighting system that makes  literature easier to understand.  Students will learn to ask questions concerning characters and issues in the literature that will deepen their understanding and begin to help them to make wise judgments.  The writing curriculum is The Lost Tools of Writing created by author Andrew Kern, president of the CiRCE Institute.  This program teaches the three canons of writing (Invention – coming up with what to say, Arrangement – ordering our thoughts appropriately, and Elocution – expressing our thoughts appropriately). Students will only be taught one canon at a time, thus eliminating much of the frustration that comes when students are asked to do all three. “This program has been called The Writing Road to Thinking because it develops thinking skills.  It gives the students practice in making judgments as they learn to build strong arguments with well-reasoned supports.”   This curriculum specifically teaches students to write a persuasive essay one layer at a time with a thesis, 3 main points and supporting points.  As the course progresses other “layers” are added such as 5 Topics of Invention, exordium, amplification, and various schemes and tropes.

Latin I – Cindy Fatheree
(7th grade and up) This 1st year course uses Matin Latin 1 & Matin Latin 2 by Karen Craig, and combines the grammar necessary to read stories early in the study of Latin with the usual work on Latin endings. Both texts teach Latin grammar through a familiarity with English grammar, and provide beginning foreign language study as well as a strengthening of English grammar. Students work with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and other parts of speech to construct and read complete but simple sentences and stories. Book 2 continues the same format as book 1 and students continue to create sentences of greater complexity with the addition of each new grammar tool, and to read stories that are increasingly more involved. Instruction in Latin will be offset against a brief backdrop of Roman history, daily life and mythology. Within the time frame of Roman history, we will also notice where the Greeks fit in, and what God was doing in the Jewish nation. Both of these nations were greatly affected by Rome. Students who maintain a B through the 1st Semester will be eligible to take the Introduction Exam of the National Latin Exam, given in March. Required Texts: Matin Latin 1 and Matin Latin 2 (Student Books) by Karen Craig. Tuition is $40 per month. Contact: cfatheree [at] sbcglobal [dot] net (281) 259-5223. 19327 Sapphire Circle Magnolia, TX 77355

                                                                      Mathematics

Saxon Math
All HIS math teachers use DIVE (Digital Interactive Video Education) Math CD-ROMs.  On your computer you watch as Dr. David Shormann writes on a dry erase board and hear him explain the problem solution process. The result is a “movie” of the lecture with the voice and writing perfectly synchronized.  There is no teacher in the way so the student sees exactly what the teacher is writing as it is being written.  The student can easily pause, rewind, and fast-forward the lecture with a click of the mouse.  Each lecture is saved as a separate file so the student can easily access previously taught lectures that need to be reviewed. Math CDs can be purchased for $50 per course.  Go to www.diveintomath.com to see a demo or to place an order.  Call 936-372-9216 for more information.  Although it is not necessary to be in a class when using DIVE CDs, many parents find it very beneficial to have someone to whom their child is accountable and someone of whom the student can ask questions.

Algebra 1/2 – Susan Garrett
This course is a more algebraically based course for the student who is ready to think more abstractly, and has fully mastered all basic facts and operations, fractions, ratios, proportions, and word application problems.  Saxon describes this course as: “Algebra 1/2 represents a culmination of pre-algebra mathematics, covering all topics normally taught in pre-algebra, as well as additional topics from geometry and discrete mathematics (used in engineering and computer sciences).”  This course will be taught using Saxon Algebra ½ 3rd Edition textbook and Dr. Shormann's DIVE CDs.  The students, under the supervision of their parents at home, will listen to the lessons on the DIVE CDs, complete the weekly homework assignments, grade and correct them and take the weekly tests. During class we will take a weekly quiz, grade and correct it, grade and correct the weekly test and cover any questions the students may have.  There will be a quarterly exam in class.  Students will need to purchase the Saxon Algebra ½ 3rd  edition text, test forms, Solutions Manual, and the DIVE CD. Tuition: $45/month for 10 months.  Please read Dr. Shormann’s article, “Math 87, Algebra 1/2, or Both?” at www.diveintomath.com to determine what course is best for your child.  You can also take a placement test at www.saxonhomeschool.com Completed registration form and first month's tuition check payable to Susan Garrett should be mailed to Debbie Gott, 9614 Dornoch Drive, Spring, Texas 77379  Contact: Noteablelessons [at] hotmail [dot] com  (281) 844-1667
